DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME
"Oregonians Encouraged to Test Their Smoke Alarms When Changing Their Clocks!"
Oregon State Fire Marshal Randy Simpson urges residents to test their smoke alarms when changing their clock from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time Sunday, November 1st. Ê
Oregon smoke alarm laws are different from most other states. Since 1999, Oregon law requires all ionization-only smoke alarms sold in the state to have a hush feature; and if an ionization-only smoke alarm is also solely battery operated, it must come with a long-life lithium battery designed to last up to 10 years.
"Oregonians should first test their smoke alarm battery before automatically replacing it," says State Fire Marshal Randy Simpson. "If you have an ionization-only alarm that is solely battery powered, it should come with a long-life battery. If your alarm has one of these batteries, you may not need to replace it every time you change your clock, that's why we encourage you to test your alarm first."
There are many different types of smoke alarms and they may be identified in different ways. To help you determine your alarm type and answer questions about batteries, recommended alarm replacement schedules and other smoke alarm information, visit:http://www.oregon.gov/OSP/SFM/CommEd_SA_Program.shtml#Smoke_Alarm_Q___A
Working smoke alarms provide an early warning to a fire, allowing you vital minutes to escape and increasing your chances of surviving a fire. Additional safety tips:
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside each sleeping area
Replace smoke alarms 8-10 years old or older
Hard-wired alarms should have battery back-ups
Never disconnect or remove batteries from smoke alarms for other uses
Make a home escape plan and practice it
For more smoke alarm and fire safety information, contact your local fire department or visit: http://www.oregon.gov/OSP/SFM/Com_Ed_Section.shtml.

TRAINING
"Hose Packs, I.V.s & Heart Monitor - with Fit Testing on the side!"
We had a very busy training night with several different areas for our volunteers to visit.
Hose Pack discussed the binding & unbinding of hose packs.
I.V.s station discussed the proper procedures used in preparing an I.V. for use.
The Heart Monitor was set-up to show how to properly connect it to a patient.
There was also a Ft Test to make sure the volunteers breathing and protective masks properly fit (sorry, no pictures)
.... and if that wasn't enough, there was also a "Flue Fire" call (sorry, no pictures of this either).

"Fall Spaghetti Feed"
One of the busiest Spaghetti Feeds I've ever attended. While the number of people who showed up seemed to be a bit fewer than normal.
So how was it busier with fewer people?
We had State Representative Tim Freeman and his family. The representative waas also took a tour of the fire stations by Chief Fuller.
This was the first Spaghetti Feed for our new Lieutenant, Sid Humphries, and he brought his family with.
And if that wasn't enough, Cheryl Martin Sund held her first book signing with profits going to support the Wimer Grange - where the Spaghetti Feeds are held.
A very busy Spaghetti Feed also includes a lot of friends and relatives getting together in support of the Evans Valley Fire Department & we'd like to "Thank" everyone who came, the volunteers who helped with traffic & parking, and especially all those wonderful EVFD Auxiliary members who worked so hard to make it possible.

"Slash Burning Season Has Begun"
Burning on public lands began this week as Bureau of Land Management fire managers started the prescribed burn program for this fall through the winter. The upcoming burns will take place through December as weather conditions and air quality permit.
The burning program goals are varied and include treating the fuels on the ground to reduce risk of insect and disease outbreaks, to create better wildlife habitat and to reduce fire hazards. The BLM follows all state regulations for smoke management and only initiate burns when weather conditions are appropriate for smoke ventilation.
Daily updates are available by calling (541) 618-2354 or (800) 267-3126. Please do not call 911 for burn information as it could interfere with emergency calls.
Included in these control burns, there will be a 30 acre burn on Sunday, and possibly into Monday, on Battle Mountain - about 6 miles north of Wimer.

"Shot Clinics Postponed Indefinitely"
The Evans Valley Fire District Shot Clinic scheduled for the 17th of October has been postponed indefinitely.
The information I've received states the reason as being the company that was to give the injections is having difficulties securing the vaccines.
This shortage of vaccines will also affect the shot clinic at the Rogue River Fire Department Open House.
While the Open House is still on, their shot clinic has been postponed indefinitely as well.
