TEACHERS GUIDE TO FIRE SAFETY
BASED ON COMMON CLASSROOM FIRE SAFETY ISSUES 1. DISPLAYS FOR CLASSROOM & HALLWAYSPaper materials such as artwork and decorations should be secured flat against the wall or bulletin board. Limit displays to 40 square feet with a break of three feet between displays. Classroom doors cannot be covered with paper.
2. PETSFire safety issues with pets involve a light or heating device. These items must be UL¨ approved. An example of a use that is unacceptable is the "shop clamp light" attached to a cage or terrarium.
3. RECYCLE MATERIALSLimit the quantity of recycle materials to a 24 X 32 inch space or about the size of two milk crates. Keep materials neat and remove them routinely.
4. EXIT CORRIDORSUse of exit hallways or corridors for storage or industrial purposes (where tables, desks or chairs are placed) is prohibited.
5. EXTENSION CORDSLong term use of extension cords should be avoided. A UL¨ approved power strip with a circuit breaker should be plugged directly into an outlet.
6. ELECTRICAL APPLIANCESAny electrical appliance must be UL¨ approved for the use and application. Any small heat producing appliance should be unplugged when not in use. Coffee pots, microwaves, and cup warmers are discouraged for classroom use.
7. STORAGEAn accumulation of storage materials provides fuel for fires. Limit quantity and use storage cabinets.
8. SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCESSpecial events, holiday activities, upholstered furniture may require guidance from your local fire department or State Fire Marshal Deputy.
9. USE OF FIREMatches and lighters do not belong in the classroom. Live fire demonstrations are prohibited, except in a designated and properly equipped science room. Use of any special effects involving fire needs permission from a Fire Marshal.
A MESSAGE FROM STATE FIRE MARSHAL NANCY ORR:"Thank you so much for caring about your students' and your school's fire safety. As a grandparent and former teacher, I honor the work that each of you do in your classrooms every day. Our primary intent with this "teachers guide" is to provide you with direct communication about reducing fire risk in your classroom and meeting Oregon's Fire Code.
